Herr Bundesminister Dieter Goethe...
Aber:I'm not saying he did a bad job. The map is spectacular. Back then getting information was way harder so it's natural that there are historical inconsistencies. It would be weirder if everything fit perfectly.
Back then maps were also a way to further up claims and make political statements, so some of the weird aspects might even be on purpose.
You can bet the maps from America at the time were very different depending on who made them.
John Senex, "became particularly interested in depicting California as an island instead of part of mainland North America."
T: Noch ne nette Erklärungen.
This map from John Senex early 1700, sometimes the colours are added later, but I doubt it's the case here, at least for what concerns you. This map actually looks really similar to most maps of the period. The reason why you are surprised is because you are judging it based on modern standards. Which is why I sometimes think on history book it would be good to add also maps of the period rather than just modern ones.
What you need to understand is that specifically because our concept of country ( a nation-state) is relatively new. Cartographers didn't always used to think as we do know that political borders were the only relevant thing, as we do now. We do it because we associate political borders with clearly defined nation-states. This map is more or less similar to the norme for that period ( it has all the typical features of a 1700 map, like" Turkey in Europe" and yes a united Germany and Italy). This map is not some sort of anomaly of some weird early nation-state entusiast, but the norme.
You might also want to know that the same cartographer had made a map of just Italy with all of its states, so he was aware of Italy's political landscape. Simply nation-states with clearly defined borders are a modern invention and Senex was following previous cartographic conventions rather than choosing to present each state that at the time could change borders quite easily he presented what at the time they would refer to as "principality"
